Family Mediation Week 2025
Family Mediation Week runs from 27-31 January 2025.
Family Mediation Week, organised by the Family Mediation Council (FMC), is an opportunity to raise awareness of family mediation and of the benefits it can bring to separating families. The FMC’s aim is to let more people know about the benefits of family mediation and encourage separating couples to think about family mediation as a way of helping them take control, make decisions together and build a positive future for their family.
The Family Mediation Council is running a series of free webinars during Family Mediation Week 2025 to help everyone learn more about family mediation and will be publishing resources and information to the media https://www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk/family-mediation-week-2025-timetable/
The traditional view of separation or divorce often conjures images of intense court battles, which can make the whole process feel overwhelming and adversarial. Mediation offers such a refreshing alternative by providing a platform where families can work together, even if it’s a difficult situation, to find solutions that are tailored to their needs.
The 2024 amendments to the Faily Procedure Rules emphasises on attending mediation and non-court dispute resolution before court proceedings are started. The requirement to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before filing for court proceedings is a practical step in ensuring that families are fully aware of the options available to them.
Mediation is a highly flexible approach that allows for tailored, bespoke solutions, which is one of its biggest advantages over the more rigid structure of court proceedings. It empowers the individuals involved to find resolutions that work specifically for their unique situation, rather than being bound by a one-size-fits-all legal ruling. This collaborative process also means that both parties have a chance to be heard and involved in decision-making, which can be more satisfying and lead to better long-term outcomes for everyone involved, especially in family matters. It is however, important to acknowledge that mediation isn’t the right fit for every situation.
